EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The College is a member of the North Coast Sports Association. The association currently has 10 member schools that geographically stretch from the Queensland border to Port Macquarie. The extent of our geographical area demands some travel between carnivals. We have also established a relationship with the local Catholic College for inter-college competition within the Ballina area.

Student involvement in the Northern Star College newspaper competition has provided success with great results. Other areas of interest that we seek to foster are Tournament of the Minds and community service such as Dune Care.

MUSIC

Classroom Music is a mandatory curriculum offering from Kindergarten to Year 8. From these classes various ensembles and choirs are assembled. Our speech and other choirs have performed exceptionally at local Eisteddfods gaining many awards and commendations. In Stages 5 and 6 (Years 9-12) Music is offered as an elective leading to Certification at School Certificate Level and Higher School Certificate level.

Instrumental tuition is available via private tutors. Currently tuition is available in Woodwind, Brass, Strings, Keyboard and Percussion. The College has a Stage Band with over thirty members.

Year 2 students are offered the opportunity to take violin tuition as part of their music curriculum. The College provides each student with a violin and weekly tuition for the year. Out of this initiative has grown our Strings Group who recently had the honour of playing for the Prime Minister, Mr John Howard.

This year saw the first school musical take place. 'Alice' the Musical was performed in Term 2 and every student from Kindergarten to Year 6 was involved.
